March and April have been SmartPayroll’s busiest months ever with over 600 new companies signing up and over 400 queries. Our helpdesk was just as busy. The new changes to wages (specifically, minimum wage increasing to $14.25 per hour) meant our helpdesk was taking 300-400 inquiries every day. On our busiest days, that number peaked at nearly 600!
This was a huge challenge for our payroll helpdesk staff, but our wonderful
SmartPayroll angels handled it with ease and we were pleased to be able to help all our clients, both new and existing. In fact, we were so impressed with our helpdesk staff that we’ve decided to treat them to a fancy coffee machine!
Incorporating minimum wage changes into your payroll system
With the April 2014 minimum wage changes the key burning question of the month, we’d like to take the opportunity to spell out what the changes really mean. The detailed breakdown has already been posted in an earlier blog, but in short:
The Adult Minimum Wage is what people most often mean when talking about minimum wage. It applies to all workers 16 years old and over who are not new entrants or trainees. From April 1st 2014 the adult minimum wage will be increasing from $13.75 per hour to $14.25.
The Starting Out and Training Minimum wages are 80% of the adult minimum wage.
If you’re already using SmartPayroll to pay your wages online, you’ll just need to make sure you adjust the rates of any employees on minimum wage. If you need some extra help, don’t hesitate to contact our helpdesk (via phone or email) for directions on exactly what you need to do!
